"I freely promise to God always to seek the perfection of the Christian life ... according to the Rule of Life of the Secular Augustinian Recollects". These words were recited by each of the three candidates who had completed the novitiate in the SARs at Tagaste Monastery and were moved to commit themselves more deeply to the fraternity at a Mass of Promises celebrated on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:00 PM. Fr. Ramón Gaitán, presiding at the service and in the name of Fr. General, Javier Guerra, OAR, accepted the promises of our new SAR members. After signing the document of promises, they received the signature pin of the fraternity along with a copy of the book Augustine Day by Day from fraternity president, Charles Squires. Concelebrating with Fr. Gaitán in the Mass were Frs. John Gruben, spiritual director of the fraternity, and Fr. Fredric Abiera, director of students at Tagaste. Fr. John delivered the homily in which he spoke about the nature of the SAR fraternity and the significance of following a Christian vocation and witnessing to Jesus Christ in today's world. After the ceremony of promises, one novice candidate was admitted to the trial period and received the Rule of Life for study during the course of the year. Professed SARs and the families of the new members were present for the Mass and joined afterward for refreshments in the Guild Hall.
