Tagaste welcomed three new students for the fall 2009 semester. Postulants Juan Aviles and José Arredondo arrived at Tagaste on August 24 to begin the final phase of their postulancy program. Both had been at St. Augustine Priory in Oxnard, California for three years and completed requirements for their A.A. degree at Oxnard College. They are registered for classes at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey and began classes on August 31. Juan Aviles, 25, originally from Mexico, joined the community while living in Santa Ana, California in our parish of Our Lady of the Pillar. José Arredondo, also 25 and a native of Mexico, had been a member of the youth group at his parish in La Habra, CA, when he made a vocational retreat at the Priory and became a candidate several months later. The third "new" student, Br. Eric Crelencia, is a solemn professed member of the community and also a former resident at the Priory in Oxnard, who arrived here on August 5 and will be studying for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary on the Seton Hall campus. These three new members of the Tagaste community join simple professed Fra. Jorge Mateos, who continues his own study program at Seton Hall. Welcome to our new students!
According to a determination of the recent Provincial Chapter of St. Augustine Province, Tagaste Monastery is now the sole formation house of the province and will serve as the training center for both postulants and professed students. Acting as director for all students in formation is Fr. Fredric Abiera, who recently completed a graduate program in Augustinian Studies at the Angelicum University in Rome. Fr, Fredric was ordained to the priesthood in 2003; originally from the Philippines, his family is currently living in Seattle, Washington. Other members of the formation team include Frs. Ramón Gaitán, prior, and Fr. John Gruben, vice prior . . . Please keep all of our students in your prayers and remember also to pray for vocations to the religious life in the Order of Augustinian Recollects. Special thanks to the members of the St. Ezekiel Moreno Chapter of the AR Guild in Oxnard and the St. Pius X Guild in Suffern for their ongoing and indispensable support of our students in formation!
