The worries about rain, unfortunately, were justified when the day of the annual Tagaste Flea Market (September 12) began overcast and damp. Opening of the event was delayed because of the weather from 8:00 until 11:00 AM and extended to 6:00 PM. In spite of the on-and-off drizzle, most of the dealers showed up and there was a fair crowd of shoppers, although nowhere near as many as in previous years.

The enthusiasm of the workers, however, was better than ever as they helped direct traffic, man the Tagaste booth, sell raffle tickets, and, above all, cook and serve hamburgers, hot dogs, delicious home-made chili, and root beer floats. The day was planned and coordinated by the Guild committee headed by president, Peggy Evans, with Br. Joe Joly acting as chief trouble shooter in spite of the bee stings he had suffered the evening before after he accidentally stepped into a hive of angry yellow jackets.

The lively music of "the Captain and Camille" (who have become a familiar sight at Tagaste events) helped to brighten up the day. Winner of the top raffle prize of $500 was Barcelona Hinojosa, an SAR member and good friend of Tagaste.

Many thanks to our Guild members for carrying out the day in spite of the grumpy mood of Mother Nature, and for showing that truly selfless spirit that has kept them going for 50 years.
