Among the regulations of the Secular Augustinian Recollects is a requirement that a new president and council be elected every three years. The Tagaste chapter of the SAR held elections on June 4. There were 35 professed members present for the election, which took place at the regular June meeting of the fraternity. The novice class was also present although not allowed, according to statute, to participate in the vote. Fr. John Gruben was acting spiritual director in place of Fr. Francis Moriones who was recuperating from an accident. Flo Opulencia was appointed president (moderator) of the voting procedure (chapter) and Margaret Costello and Rita Gannon were appointed tellers to help count the ballots. The election traditionally takes place through the use of written and secret balloting. Nominations for each position were entertained from the chapter members.
Mr. Charles Squires, current president, was reelected for another three years. The new councilors are as follows: Aracely Cienfuegos (Spirituality), Richard Mattern (Membership) and Marge Rosario (Hospitality). The Council then went on to reappoint the remaining members of the council: Joseph Marsico (Master of Novices), Liz Canovan (Secretary) and Remy Catolico (Treasurer). All gave their approval to the new council with a round of applause, and the session ended with a brief social with coffee and sweets. Congratulations to the members of the new council for 2008-11!
