The 11th annual Golf Outing fund-raiser sponsored by the Tagaste Guild took place with sunshine and warm weather on Wednesday, May 7. As usual, the event was held at Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern. Rita Gannon was chairperson for the occasion, ably assisted by the Golf Committee. Activities began with a noon lunch and shotgun start at 1:00 PM, with 118 golfers on hand, including Fr. Marlon Beof, who represented the Tagaste community on the green. Our professed students helped by selling raffle and 50/50 tickets during the afternoon. The rest of the community arrived around 6:30 PM for dinner and the awards presentations. Mr. Greg Hayden, a member of the committee, acted as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Fra. Jorge Mateos was introduced as the new student recipient of the golf award for the educational fund of the province, replacing Dn. Juan José Guzman who had been recipient for the past four years.
Dinner, which was preceded by a cocktail hour with open bar, provided a choice of prime rib, chicken, or tilapia. Fr. Ramón Gaitan, Tagaste prior, gave the table blessing. There were door prizes which included golf balls, golf shirts, and bottles of wine, and a 50/50. There was also a silent auction and a special auction. Top items for the auction, which had all been donated, included two Toshiba 32 inch flat-screen TV sets, a lap top computer, several golf clubs, and two tickets to a Yankee Ball Game. Trophies were awarded for "low net" and "low gross". All of the auctions netted around $3000, and the 50/50 paid off $450 both to the winner and the community. Total profits for the event ran in the neighborhood of $26,000. Congratulations and thanks to Rita, all the members of the Committee, those who sponsored and made donations, and all who worked to make the day another wonderful success! May God bless you all!
