Most Catholics know that Good Friday is the only day in the Church's calendar when Mass is not celebrated. Instead, the Church offers an ancient rite commemorating the Passion and Death of the Lord which consists of four parts:
- The Scripture readings, including the Passion Narrative in the Gospel of St. John;
- The General Intercessions for the needs of the Church and the world;
- The adoration of the Cross; and
- Holy Communion.
Fr. Marlon Beof led the Tagaste community in the Good Friday services which were conducted this year in Spanish. The liturgy began, as is customary, in total silence and with a profound prostration of the celebrant and ministers followed immediately by the opening prayer. For the proclamation of the Passion, Mrs. Mercedes Gabella was the narrator; Dn. Guzman took the other parts, while Fr. Beof played the part of Christ.
After the readings, the homily and the intercessions, the ministers unveiled the Cross in solemn procession, echoing the traditional words "This is the Wood of the Cross", whereupon all venerated this central symbol of Christian faith. The reception of Communion followed the veneration. After the liturgy concluded there was a remarkable display of devotion by the people in front of the images of Christ crucified and his Sorrowful Mother.
