The Easter Vigil service was once again celebrated at Tagaste Monastery after several years of joining the parish community at Sacred Heart. The liturgy, which began at 7:00 PM on March 22, was presided by Fr. Ramón Gaitan, who celebrated the Mass and delivered the homily in Spanish. The chapel was beautifully decorated with Easter lilies, fiery red azaleas, and other fresh flowers. Many people brought bottles of water to be blessed during the Rite of Baptism.
The blessing of the new fire and preparation of the Paschal candle took place just outside the main entrance to the chapel. At that point the congregation, led by Dn. Guzman, who carried the candle, processed into the darkened chapel where Fr. Marlon Beof sang the "Exultet", the hymn celebrating the wonder of Easter. The Liturgy of the Word then proceeded with the History of Salvation from the Old and New Testament Readings and their responses that are traditional at the Vigil Mass.
After the readings, the singing of the Gloria and the Easter Alleluia, and the homily, two catechumens approached the altar for Baptism; there was also one Confirmation and four First Holy Communions celebrated. Congratulations to all those who received the Sacraments of Initiation this Easter and are now full members of the Church. May the Risen Lord bless all of us with his new life!
