The community at Tagaste honored Mary under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe at a special vigil service on December 11. Mass was celebrated at 10:30 PM; the chapel was overflowing with people, many of them dressed in traditional Mexican clothing. A large shrine with the image of Guadalupe was set up near the pulpit, and literally dozens of bouquets of beautiful multi-colored flowers—most of the roses—decorated the shrine.
The Hispanic choir was present to provide music in honor of the Virgin. Fr. Ramón Gaitán was the principal celebrant and delivered the homily; he was accompanied by Fr. John Gruben and by Dn. Juan José Guzmán, who proclaimed the Gospel and helped with the distribution of communion. Following the Mass there was a blessing of the many children who were present. The people themselves sang impromptu hymns in honor of Mary and all were invited to the hall following the liturgy to enjoy tamales, quesadillas, pan dulce, and champurrados. The celebration did not end until about 2:00 AM.
