The Third Sunday of Advent is traditionally called Gaudete Sunday, the word Gaudete being the Latin word for "rejoice", taken from the entrance verse of the liturgy of the day, and indicating that Christmas —the time of joy— is just around the corner.
The liturgy of December 16 was doubly joyful since it featured the investiture of five men and women from the Hispanic Community to serve as special ministers of the Eucharist. Fr. Ramón Gaitan presided at the liturgy; he was accompanied by Msgr. Joseph Giandurco, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, and assisted by Dn. Juan José Guzman.
The new ministers had received a four-week training course from Br. George Valdivia, and were being authorized to bring Holy Communion especially to the Spanish-speaking who were homebound or hospitalized.
