Perhaps many people could think that Father's Day celebration came about just to commercialize. However, this is not the case.
Mrs. Smart Dodd, a resident of Washington State is the person who is responsible for bringing up the idea of celebrating Father's Day. She wanted, somehow, to acknowledge the outstanding work of her father who took care of her siblings when her mother died. In 1909 Mrs. Smart Dodd put forward the proposal of celebrating Father's Day. However, her proposal did not succeed. It was not until June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington when Father's Day was celebrated for the first time. Mrs. Smart Dodd, looked at her father as a valorous, caring and selfless man, chose the date of June 19, 1910 as the date to celebrate Father's Day in honor to the month in which her father was born.
In 1924 president Calvin Coolidge supported the idea and officially made Father's Day a national celebration. In 1966, president Lyndon Johnson endorsed a presidential proclamation in which he declared the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in the United States. With this celebration we wanted to acknowledge the important role fathers play in our lives. We want to let our fathers know that we are very grateful to them, since along with our mother they have created a world for us. To all who have their fathers in the celestial kingdom we assure you of our prayers.
At the Parish of Sacred Heart in Suffern, a group from the bible study celebrated, in unity with all fathers, the festivity of Father's Day with songs, rich food and a big acknowledgement.
