THE HAPPINESS OF A SHOEMAKER
- by Deacon Julián
God took the form of a beggar, went down to the nearby town and looked for a shoemaker. When he found one, he said to him: brother, I am very poor, I have no money, and my sandals are worn out. Would you do me the favor of... The shoemaker responded: I sick and tired of everyone soliciting something and nobody giving anything.
The beggar answered him: I could give you what you need. The shoemaker distrustfully looked at the beggar and said to him: ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Could you give a million dollars? My having that much money will make me very happy. The beggar responded him: I could give ten times more of what you are asking, but in turn, you have to give me something. The shoemaker answered: what do you want in exchange? The beggar responded: I can give you that money in exchange for your legs. The shoemaker replied. What is the purpose of my having ten million dollars if I will not be able to walk. The beggar repeats and says to him: I will give you hundred millions dollars in exchange for your arms. The shoemaker responds: what is the purpose of my having hundred millions dollars if I will not be able to eat on my own.
The beggar said to him for the last time: look, I will give you thousand millions dollars in exchange for your eyes. The shoemaker replied: what is the purpose my having thousand millions dollars if I won't be able to see my wife, sons and daughters and friends. Then the beggar answered him: Oh brother! How fortunate you are and you don't realize it.
